Fr. Timothy Zak, SDB, Provincial Superior, Salesians of Don Bosco, Province of St. Philip the Apostle, announced today that Charles D. Imbergamo will be stepping down as President and CEO of Cristo Rey Tampa, located on the Salesian campus of Mary Help of Christians, at the end of the school term June 30. Imbergamo has been Cristo Rey’s founding President since its launch in July 2015.
“I know I speak for all of us in the Salesian province, the religious community and all involved at Mary Help of Christians Center, the faculty, staff, and students at Cristo Rey in saying how deeply indebted we are to Mr. Imbergamo and how much we will miss him,” said Fr. Zak. “Through his tireless energy and incredible leadership, we were able to start this unique school and get it firmly established. Thanks to his vision we look forward to celebrating our first graduating class in May 2020.”
Cristo Rey Tampa is one of 35 schools in a network founded in 1996 that has enabled more than 15,000 students nationally from underserved, low-income communities to develop their minds and hearts to become society’s future leaders. Cristo Rey provides students a college preparatory education along with a unique four-year, integrated corporate work/study experience. Since its inception, 100% of all Cristo Rey graduates have been accepted into college and graduate there at a rate three times higher than other low-income students. Cristo Rey Tampa welcomed its first freshman class in August 2016 and next year will have expanded to all four high school classes. The religious sponsor of Cristo Rey Tampa is the Salesians of Don Bosco, who ensure that the school maintains a strong Catholic identity and mission, and is also true to the Salesian charism.
The New York native began his career in education in Marist Brothers’ Schools in New York and New Jersey. In 1999, he began his work in administrative in Brownsville, Texas where he served as assistant principal, principal, and president/CEO for 10 years. In 2009, he moved to Corpus Christi to a PK3-grade 12 school as curriculum director and eventually president/CEO.
Imbergamo holds a master’s degree in Catholic School Leadership/School Administration, an Executive Certificate in Not-for-Profit Leadership, and is a Certified Fund-Raising Executive, CFRE. During his career he has raised in excess of $20 Million for Catholic schools. He has also served as an independent consultant to schools across the country.
“It has been one of the greatest privileges of my life to work with an amazing group of faculty, staff, and volunteer leaders to help get Cristo Rey Tampa off to a strong start,” said Imbergamo. “I feel like I have given what I can and now the school could benefit from having a new ‘voice.’ I will be moving into a new field, but I will continue helping the school to progress in my remaining time as President and thereafter as an advisor to the Board of Directors.”
While Imbergamo will continue to serve in his role as President and CEO at Cristo Rey Tampa through June 30 and will remain in a key advisory capacity thereafter, a search for his replacement is underway.
