Tony Miranda, an Electrical Engineer who developed products in emerging global markets, turned high school teacher, was recognized as a Distinguished Teacher by the Cristo Rey Tampa High School Board of Directors for his dedication to academics and the Cristo Rey Tampa (CRT) community.
Mr. Miranda was honored at a luncheon hosted by Board Member and Corporate Work Study Program Partner Albert Docobo, CEO and President of American Roofing & Sheet Metal, Inc.
Miranda turned his love for math into a second career and joined Teach for America (New York) in 2013 and went on to teach at Bronx Career and College Preparatory High School until 2016. He decided to return to his native Tampa, Florida, and joined the faculty of Cristo Rey Tampa High School as a founding member.
Miranda currently teaches Algebra I, Algebra II, and Robotics, but his passion extends beyond the school day. He runs the Afterschool Home Work Center each day to ensure all students receive needed assistance. Miranda’s difference in the classroom and the lives of CRT students is visible. “Tony is selfless with his time, and he cares so much about how students perform,” shared Principal Matt Torano.
He believes he has come full circle in his career. Miranda says with a smile, “Now, as a teacher, I am motivating and molding students, so that they can invent the products, to do the same for future generations to come.”
Tony Miranda and family emigrated from Cuba in 1969, a few months before his birth. He has two sisters and a brother and loves being back in his hometown after 30 years when he set out for Georgia Tech in Atlanta, Georgia.
Welcome Home, Tony! Cristo Rey Tampa High School is proud you are a faculty member, mentor, and mission partner.
