In the early weeks of August most Cristo Rey students were enjoying their last days of sleeping in and being off from school. Instead, Maria Alas, ’21, ended her summer by launching a school supply drive to benefit her Cristo Rey classmates and teachers. When asked what sparked her interest to collect supplies Maria shared, “Over the last year I noticed that some kids weren’t able to meet their full potential in class because they didn’t have the materials required to meet the task.” With her can do spirit and determination, Maria set out to collect supplies and items that she knew her classmates and teachers needed during the year.
Maria’s hard work and effort paid off. Corporate Work Study Program Partners participated and delivered supplies. This drive resulted in backpacks, pens and pencils, loose leaf paper, binders, dry erase markers, glue sticks, and much more to help her Cristo Rey Family. She has worked with Cristo Rey staff to distribute supplies and is ready to begin planning for next year’s drive.
Maria is a CRT student who exemplifies the Mission of Cristo Rey Tampa High School. She is actively living faith, hope, and love.
Congratulations, Maria! #CRTProud
