Two CRT Students are Georgetown University bound for the summer

Congratulations to Armando Diaz, Jr. and Jeremy Hurtado, Cristo Rey Tampa’s first students admitted to Georgetown University - Summer College Immersion Program (SCIP).

Armando Diaz, ’20 and Jeremy Hurtado, ’20, were accepted to the Georgetown University - Summer College Immersion Program (SCIP). This program is open to high achieving rising seniors in the Cristo Rey Network and KIPP Foundation school systems, as well as other select schools and community organizations. The program received more than 150 applications that were reviewed by the Georgetown University undergraduate admissions team. The team chose the students they believe would be the most successful as Georgetown University undergraduate students upon high school graduation.

Armando and Jeremy will set off to Washington, D.C. on June 30th for a three-week, all expenses paid, college prep program. They will join a select group of 45 students from across the country who will begin their college admissions journey while participating in lectures by distinguished Georgetown faculty, group discussions, and field trips. As Georgetown summer students, Armando and Jeremy will stay in residence halls and are invited to after-hours activities. They will each choose from a myriad of activities that range from Arts and Music, to college readiness, to the sites of D.C. and college tours. There will also be free time after classes in which they can enjoy the campus or explore the greater D.C. area.

Both young men are excited about their summer adventures and are thankful for this opportunity. Armando’s goal is to return home with a completed college essay that will impress college admission teams. He also shared, “I am looking forward to exploring D.C. and making connections.”  Jeremy’s goal is to make the most of this firsthand experience of college life. “I look forward to meeting people from all over and searching my college options,” said Jeremy.

Armando and Jeremy learned about this program while discussing their summer plans with Mr. John Davidson, Director of Guidance and College Counseling, Cristo Rey Tampa High. “We were looking for summer options, and Mr. Davidson recommended this program to us,” said Armando. Mr. Davidson has dedicated many hours this spring to search for summer programs that meet the needs of CRT students. Davidson shared, “when I learned about the Georgetown University – SCIP, our top performers came to mind immediately because a university of this caliber is a natural fit.” In addition to attending this prestigious program, both young men will receive a $33/week spending allowance and a $400 stipend upon successful completion of the program.

Armando is the son of Ms. Maritza Diaz. He attended Community Charter School for middle school and DeSoto and Forest Hills Elementary Schools. He is an active member of the CRT Boys’ Soccer Team, the Anime Club, and participates in student government sponsored community service projects. Armando is a student worker at the United States Bankruptcy Court in Judge Catherine McEwen’s chambers and previously worked at the Amalie Arena.

Jeremy is the son of Mr. & Mrs. Manolo Hurtado. He attended Williams Middle Magnet School and Muller Elementary Magnet School. He is active in CRT Campus Youth Ministry, is an altar server, and participates in student government sponsored community service projects. Jeremy is a student worker at JP Morgan and previously worked at Masonite and the Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office.

Congratulations, Armando and Jeremy! Your Cristo Rey Tampa family is proud of you.
