A Story of Success: Meet Maria Alas, Alumni ' 21
When Maria Alas walked through the doors of Cristo Rey Tampa as a freshman, she carried with her the dreams of her family and the quiet hope of a brighter future. What she may not have known then was just how much she would grow—academically, professionally, and spiritually—within our walls.
During her four years at Cristo Rey Tampa, Maria embraced every opportunity offered to her. Through our Corporate Work Study Program, she gained real-world experience at respected organizations, including Girl Scouts of West Central Florida, Metropolitan Ministries, Coca-Cola Beverages Florida, and the Florida Aquarium. That final placement would leave a lasting impact—so much so that she returned to work there during her college breaks, building meaningful relationships and skills that set her apart.
Inside the school building, Maria was just as impressive. She served as Vice President of Student Government, Captain of the Volleyball Team, and a dedicated member of Key Club. Her leadership and character earned her the prestigious West Point Society’s Excellence in High School Leadership Award and Cristo Rey Tampa’s President’s Leadership Award.
In May 2025, Maria graduated from St. Mary’s College with a Bachelor of Science in Neurobiology, and today, she begins her professional journey full-time at the Florida Aquarium. In the same place, her passions and skills found their start as a Cristo Rey student.
Maria’s story is a living testament to what becomes possible when a young person is surrounded by opportunity, mentorship, and faith. Her success is not only her own—it belongs to every teacher, every corporate partner, and every donor who believed in her potential.
